  • Delivered a paper April 17, 2000, at the University of Sunderland, UK entitled "Henri Bergson, Aldo Leopold, and an Ethics of the Land," also, chaired a symposium on "Creative Freedom";
  • "Bergson Redevivus" in the Magazin Litteraire (Paris) Vol. 23, April, 2000, pp. 7-9; and,
  • Re-elected Chairman of the Board of the Foundation for Philosophy of Creativity at the board's annual meeting in Chicago, April 22, 2000.

 

Eugene C. Hargrove

  • "Toward Teaching Environmental Ethics: Exploring Problems in the Language of Evolving Social Values," in the Canadian Journal of Environmental Education 5 (2000): 1-20.
  • Two issues of the journal Environmental Ethics, vol. 22, nos. 1 & 2 (2000); 1-224.
  • Organized and participated in a panel discussion with Grover Hankins, Professor of Law at Texas Southern University, and Phyllis Glazer, an environmental activist, "Fruit of the Orchard: Pollution, Environmental Justice, and Social Responsibility," at Texas Southern University in Houston, Texas, March 4, 2000. The panel discussion was associated with a documentary photographic art exhibit, by Tammy Cromer-Campbell, which was part of Fotofest: International Month of Photography. The discussion was covered by CNN. Hargrove has organized a second panel discussion to be held by the Center for Environmental at the University of North Texas, June 8, 2000, which included a larger panel, including Hargrove, Gerald Carney (Chief Toxicologist, Region 6, EPA), Bruce Jones (Regional Counsel, Region 6, EPA), Don Wall (Environmental Reporter, WFAA-TV), Leslie Fields (Environmental Lawyer), and Phyllis Glazer (an environmental activist), also called "Fruit of the Orchard: Pollution, Environmental Justice, and Social Responsibility." The panel discussion was associated with the Cromer-Campbell photography exhibit, sponsored by the Center for Environmental Philosophy and the Blue Earth Alliance, which will be on display in the Environmental Education, Science and Technology Building at UNT from May 24 to July 28.
  • Organized a three-day research conference, "Environmental Philosophy and the Earth Sciences," sponsored by the Center for Environmental Philosophy and INCLUDE, an agency of the U.S. Geological Survey, April 7-9, 2000. The conference included speakers from the U.S. Geological Survey, the Geological Society of America, the National Science Foundation, New York University, Fordham University, and Columbia University.

 

George A. James

  • Special lecture on the History and Philosophy of Buddhist Religion to the religious school of Kohl Ami Jewish Synagogue in Lewisville TX.
  • Special presentation to the Women's Studies Colloquium at the University of North Texas on his research concerning Environmental Movements in India.
  • Chaired a section of presentations at the annual Heidegger conference at the University of North Texas.
  • Essay on "Religious and Ethical Dimensions of the Chipko Movement" was accepted for publication and will appear in a volume of essays entitled Hinduism and Ecology:
  • The Intersection of Earth, Sky, and Water edited by Christopher and Mary Evelyn Tucker, to be published by Harvard University Press in the summer of 2000.
  • Applied for a Faculty Research Grant, a Charn Uswachoke Fellowship, and a Faculty Development Leave. Pending approval by the Board of Regents, he was awarded a Faculty Development Leave. The Charn Uswachoke Fellowship and the Faculty Research Grant remain pending.
  • Served as departmental Undergraduate Advisor.

Richard M. Owsley

  • December 27, 1999 - elected President of the Karl Jaspers Society of North America.
  • March 31, 2000 - Presented the paper Meaning and Truth in Continental Philosophy at the annual meeting of the New Mexico/West Texas Philosophical Association meeting in Irving, Texas.
  • His paper Martin Heidegger and Logic was published in the 1999 volume of Southwest Philosophical Studies. (published March, 2000)
  • April 11, 2000 - Presented the paper Cassirer and The Problem of Myth at The Dallas Philosophers' Forum.
  • April 19, 2000 - Gave the opening address, The Meaning of Truth in Husserl and Heidegger, at the 20th Heidegger Conference, UNT.
  • April 19, 2000 - Was honored by students and colleagues for his work in establishing a fertile ground for the study of Martin Heidegger and Phenomenology.

Martin D. Yaffe

  • Delivered a paper, "The Oracle and the Action in Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale," at the American Academy of Religion Southwest meeting in Irving, Texas, on March 4, 2000.
  • Recipient of subvention grants from the Nancy C. and Jeffrey A. Marcus Foundation and various other sources, in support of the publication of his Judaism and Environmental Ethics: A Reader (Lanham, MD: Lexington Books, forthcoming).
