John received a Bachelor of Music with a concentration in composition from Texas Western College in El Paso, Texas in 1966, a B.A. in philosophy from the University of Texas at El Paso in 1969, an M.A. in musicology from North Texas State University in 1973 (with Dr. Dika Newlin), an M.A. in philosophy from Florida State University in 1980, and a Ph.D. in philosophy from Florida State University in 1984 (in aesthetics and phenomenology with Dr. Eugene F. Kaelin). His dissertation, A Critique of Musicology, was directed by Dr. Russell Dancy.

John taught as an adjunct and as a lecturer in the Department of Philosophy and Religion Studies at the University of North Texas from September 1, 1984 until his death on March 14, 1993.

The John Kimmey Scholar is the undergraduate honoree at Honor's Day and receives a stipend of $500. The award is made in the spring semester each year.
