Graduate Support

Teaching Assistants and Teaching Fellows

Teaching Assistants (TAs, who are usually 1st year MA students assigned to logic classes) and Teaching Fellows (TFs, who teach their own classes) are available for a number of our graduate students. In AY07-08, the stipends began at $13,700 per year. With optional summer teaching (one to two courses), the stipend can be as high as $20,500 (provided summer funding is available). It includes a waiver of out-of-state tuition (i.e., the student pays at the in-state rate instead).

The Department also has a limited number of Research Assistant (RA) positions available. Research Assistants typically work on one or another of the Departmental projects such as the UNT Chile Field Station or an NSF grant. Stipends for RAs vary, but are at least as much as TA/TF stipends. RAs are usually tied to the work of a particular professor who contacts students for their interest and availability.

TFs, TAs, or RAs are half-time (20 hours/week) positions and as such are eligible to participate in the university's group insurance program. Enrollment information may be obtained from the departmental office, the university's Human Resources Office or at http://www.unt.edu/hr/benefits/index.htm.

Students applying to be Teaching Assistants or Teaching Fellows should indicate their intentions on the letters of purpose that they submit with the other application materials due by February 1 each year. More details of the application requirements can be found at our Graduate Admissions page.

They can be awarded to first or second year students. Supports awarded in the first year can be renewed for a second year.

There are also a limited number of Toulouse Fellowships are awarded by the Graduate School. Each spring the Department submits candidates for the Toulouse award, which is $10,000 for MA students and $20,000 plus tuition for PhD students. Bidisha Kumar was our Toulouse Fellow for 2007.

Because of the Department’s work in Environmental Ethics, students in fourteen southern states are eligible to apply for waivers of out-of-state tuition.

Although there are no scholarships specifically for philosophy graduate students, they are eligible to apply for scholarships:
