Bidisha Mallik

Bidisha Mallik is a PhD student and has recently defended her doctoral dissertation titled,"The Contribution of Mira Behn and Sarala Behn to Social and Environmental Transformation in the Indian State of Uttarakhand." Her dissertation examines the contribution of two European associates of M.K. Gandhi, Mira Behn (Madeleine Slade) and Sarala Behn (Catherine Mary Heilemann) in social development and environmental sustainability in the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand. As the first comprehensive research on the philosophy and contribution of Mira Behn and Sarala Behn, her research reveals their roles as pioneers in the environmental field, as initiators of a new cultural consciousness on social justice and environmental sustainability amongst mountain communities in India that created the Chipko and Anti-Tehri Dam movements. Mallik's research interests include environmental philosophy, Gandhian philosophy, sustainability ethics, women's studies, and interdisciplinary public policy studies on water.
